A Matsue washi temari ball making-experience using Izumo folkcraft paper
Contents
The making of a Matsue washi temari ball using Shimane’s handmade washi, Izumo folkcraft paper. Pasting on pieces of colored washi paper, you will be making your own original temari.
In addition, the teacher is also a tea master, and as a special treat for Osewa-san's experience, we were invited to enjoy matcha green tea in the workshop's tea room after the Washi Temari experience!
You can choose from a Matsue washi double-sided temari (8 cm) or a Matsue washi temari charm (5 cm).
Matsue washi double-sided temari
Pasting a belt of washi paper onto the center of the temari, you can paste pieces of colored washi paper as you like on both sides.
Matsue washi temari charm
Finish off the charm with a metal piece in Osewa-san style. It will look great on your bag.

Temari balls were popular among females during the Edo period, and, given as souvenirs during the time when major feudal lords alternated Edo residences, their popularity spread throughout all regions. It is said that Matsue’s temari balls were first made by Matsue Domain’s lords’ women-in-waiting. Temari-making started here, then using Shimane’s handmade washi, Izumo folkcraft paper, Matsue washi temari were made. These temari balls, made colorful by using embroidery thread, indigo-dyed thread, and pieces of washi paper, are pretty beyond comparison. Also, in addition to washi-temari, we will be making ai- temari using Hirosegasuri’s indigo-dyed thread. The geometric pattern made with five different shades of color in indigo-dyed thread is unlike no other, and the appearance changes according to the order in which the thread is used. These temari-making experiences are only possible here. We invite you to enjoy the experience of becoming absorbed in working the indigo-dyed thread and also the experience of creating patterns from the pieces of washi.
