1-Day Tour: Sky-High Tea Plantation and Japanese Sweets Making Experience

This plan let you join a hands-on workshop on making traditional Matsue wagashi sweets, followed by a visit to a fully organic tea plantation located on the mountain behind Yaegaki Shrine.

Experience Matsue tea making while witnessing the Japanese people's coexistence with nature in the land of ancient Izumo! An interpreter guide will accompany you on all tours. ◆ In the morning, at Karakoro Plaza, you'll experience making two types of wagashi under the direct guidance of artisans from Saiundo, a long-established wagashi shop in Matsue. You'll be able to take home the sweets you create. ◆ Enjoy lunch at Karakoro Plaza's food court. (Lunch is not included in the tour fee.) ◆ After lunch, take a private tour to visit Matsue Takarabako, an organic tea plantation. From the tea plantation fields, you can enjoy spectacular views of Lake Shinji to the east and Lake Nakaumi to the west. The standard experience will consist of a talk by the tea farm staff about organically grown tea, an experience of the roasted tea manufacturing process, and a tea (sencha) tasting. Depending on the season, additional experiences may be added depending on the season, such as picking new tea buds, harvesting persimmons, blueberries, plums, etc., or making hand-rolled black tea. The remaining time is free to wander around the tea farm on your own. [Note] Takarabako does not make matcha. All experiences are sencha.

Enjoy making tea while taking in the scenery of Matsue, which changes with the seasons.

Takarabako's tea farm is located in Oba Sorayama, south of Matsue City. It offers panoramic views of the San'in mountain ranges and rural landscapes, as well as the wide-open expanses of Lake Shinji and Lake Nakaumi.
Takarabako practices sustainable agriculture by making compost from branches and wood chips pruned from homes and parks in Matsue City, and then using that compost to produce 100% organic tea. Come and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the air that flows through Oba Sorayama, the scent of plants, the smell of the soil, and the presence of living creatures.

Get to Know Bancha! ~A Tea Culture Unique to the San'in Region~

Bancha is a beloved tea culture in the Izumo region. This region's bancha tea is made by steaming large, firm tea leaves grown in the fall and winter, then drying them without rolling them and roasting them to a fragrant finish. It has been enjoyed by the common people as part of their tea culture since the Edo period, and is also known as "baby bancha" (baby tea) as it is low in caffeine and stimulating and can be drunk even by babies. It has little astringency and a clean, fragrant flavor, making it an everyday tea that can be enjoyed all year round by brewing it in hot water or by infusing it in water.
